1994 Matte Proof Jefferson Nickel

  • The 1994-P Matte Proof Jefferson Nickel was a specially issued coin, included only as part of a collector set offered by the United States Mint in conjunction with the Thomas Jefferson Commemorative Coin Program. As a result of the limited distribution, the matte proof coin has a relatively low mintage of 167,703 pieces.

  • The coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint and bearing the “P” mint mark, was included within the Thomas Jefferson Coinage and Currency Set. Each set included the unciculated version of the Thomas Jefferson Silver Dollar (dated 1993, but issued in 1994), a crisp uncirculated 1976 $2 bill, and the 1994-P Jefferson Nickel struck in matte proof. The sets were priced at $34.00 during an introductory period and later $39.00.
  • The total number of sets sold by the US Mint was 167,703, which also became the mintage of the included nickel. Because of the special production and distribution, this issue is typically found in high grade, often MS69 or MS70.  Examples of the coin, which have remained within the original product packaging usually acquire toning.
